In Idaho, you must be at least 18 years old to sell or transfer a long gun like a rifle or shotgun in a private sale, with the age requirement varying by firearm type.

Background Checks in Private Sales

Idaho state law generally permits private sales without the necessity of a background check or the involvement of a licensed dealer.

Ineligible Persons

Idaho Code § 18-3316, which covers "Firearms, Explosives, and Other Deadly Weapons" explains some of criteria for ineligible persons pertaining to firearms transfers including but not limited to :

• A person who previously has been convicted of a felony
• "convicted of a felony" shall include a person who has entered a plea of guilty, nolo contendere or has been found guilty of any of the crimes enumerated in section 18-310 Idaho Code, or to a comparable felony crime in another state, territory, commonwealth, or other jurisdiction of the United States.
• Minors less than 18 years old (without consent or accompaniment of parent or guardian
• People who are not U.S. citizens
