Identification Requirements

In Arizona, there are no identification requirements for private firearms transactions. Identification is recommended if you wish to maintain a record of the transaction.

Waiting Periods

Arizona does not require waiting periods in private firearms transactions.

Age requirements

In Arizona, you must be 18 years old to buy a gun in a private sale and 21 years old to buy a gun from a dealer with a federal license. These rules apply to both long guns (including rifles and shotguns) and handguns.

Background Checks in Private Sales

Arizona does not require background checks for private transactions.

Ineligible Persons

Prohibited possessors are defined in Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 13-3101.

Examples include:

• Any person who has been found to constitute a danger to self or to others or to have a persistent or acute disability or grave disability pursuant to court order pursuant to section 36-540, and whose right to possess a firearm has not been restored pursuant to section.
• Any person who has been convicted within or without this state of a felony or who has been adjudicated delinquent for a felony and whose civil right to possess or carry a firearm has not been restored.
• Any person who is at the time of possession serving a term of imprisonment in any correctional or detention facility.
