The G41(W) was Walther’s response to the German Army’s 1940 call for a semi-automatic service rifle. Submitted alongside Mauser’s G41(M), it used a gas-trap system at the muzzle to comply with requirements prohibiting drilled-barrel gas ports. Both rifles entered testing around the same time, but the Walther design was ultimately favored and fielded in limited numbers before being superseded by the improved G43.
